Men's fencing takes fifth at New Englands

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Brandeis Men's Fencing Team finished in fifth place and qualified four fencers for the individual tournament at the 2010 New England Intercollegiate Fencing Championships at Mount Holyoke College. The epee squad swept Boston University, Tufts, UNH, and URI, and defeated second-seeded Sacred Heart 2-1. Senior Alex Kasper (Richmond, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union) went 8-2, qualifying for the individual tournament in which he came in seventh, while junior David Litvak (Los Angeles, CA/Palisades Center) went 6-1. Men's sabre swept Boston University, Dartmouth, URI, and Williams College, and defeated third-seeded Sacred Heart 2-1, with juniors Adam Austin (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack) and Jon Rollock (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) beating Marty Williams 5-1 and Charles Fleck 5-4, respectively. Both Austin and Rollock went 9-3, and the two qualified for the individual round in which Austin came in fifth. The foil squad swept Boston University, Dartmouth, UMass, UNH, and Williams. Junior Sean Norton was 9-3, coming in eighth in the individual tournament. Junior Andrew Mandel (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) went 5-2, and rookie Jason Lefenfeld (Beverly, Mass./St. Johns Prep) went 7-5.
