Fencing Team Wins Second Overall at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing College (NEIFC) Championships

The Brandeis Men's Fencing Team won the Bronze Medal at the new England Championships at Mount Holyoke College last Sunday. Competing against twelve other schools, the saber squad took second place while foil and epee came in fourth and sixth, respectively. Five members of the team competed in the individual round, and two medaled.

 

In foil, the men swept University of Massachusetts, WPI, and University of New Hampshire. Rookie Julian Cardillo (Medford, MA/St. Johns Prep) had a record of 9-2, qualifying him for the individual round. He defeated members of medaling schools Boston College, Vassar, and MIT, and overall took the Gold medal.

 

The epee squad swept Tufts, University of Massachusetts, and Williams. Junior Nick Gordon (Mill Valley, Calif./Phillips Andover) went 7-3 for the day, defeating Brian Like of winning team Boston College 5-4. Sophomore Mike Zook (Chicago, IL/Univ. of Chicago Lab School) defeated Nick Johnson of bronze medal school Vassar 5-2, and qualified for the championship round.

 

Amongst the men's team, the saber squad had the strongest day, taking the silver medal in their weapon. The squad swept Boston University, Tufts, Vassar, and MIT who took Bronze overall. Seniors Jon Rollock (Gilford, NH/Gilford) and Adam Austin (Dix Hills, NY/Commack) and rookie Mark Borreliz (Westborough, MA/Buckingham, Brown & Nichols) all qualified for the individual round. Rollock went 10-1 against the other schools, and took the silver medal in the individual round, defeating Marty Williams of second-seeded team Sacred Heart University 5-1. Austin went 9-2, and took fourth place overall.
