WALTHAM, Mass.- Brandeis University sophomore Julian Cardillo of Medford, Mass., has been selected to represent the Judges at the 2012 NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championships. Cardillo, a foil fencer, will be taking part in his second career national championship when he takes on the best collegiate fencers from Division I, II and III institutions at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, from March 22-25.

Cardillo, who finished 17th out of 24 fencers at the NCAAs as a rookie in 2011, earned an at-large berth at the NCAA championships after finishing 10th at the Northeast Regional championships this past Sunday. He posted a 52-20 record for the Judges during the regular season and earned bronze medals at two Northeast Fencing Conference. Seeded seventh headed into the regional meet, Cardillo went 3-3 in the opening pool, qualifying for the second round with the last available spot. He advanced to the final round with a 4-2 record, moving on in the ninth position, before posting a 3-7 record in the finals.

"I'm very pleased for Julian," said Brandeis head coach Bill Shipman. "He didn't necessarily fence his best at the regional championships, so I look forward to him returning to form at the NCAAs."

Cardillo is one of four fencers from Division III schools who will be participating at the 2012 NCAA championships, along with NYU foil fencer Phillip Jameson and Vassar epee fencer Nick Johnson on the men's side and MIT saber fencer Robin Shin on the women's side.

Cardillo is a 2010 graduate of St. Johns Prep School. He is the son of Antonio and Lucia Cardillo, Medford, Mass.
