CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Brandeis fencing teams competed at the 2013 Beanpot Tournament at Boston College on Tuesday night. The men finished in second place, while the women placed third.

On the men's side, the Judges edged MIT, 15-12, and BC, 14-13, but fell to seventh-ranked Harvard, 21-6. The win over MIT avenged a 16-11 loss earlier in the season, while it was their second one-point victory over the Eagles of the season. The top individual performer on the night was sophomore Adam Mandel (White Plains, N.Y./Masters School) of the saber squad, who went 8-1. Classmate and fellow saberist Jess Ochs-Willard (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) was 7-2. The Judges close the dual-meet portion of their scheduled with a 14-9 record.

For the Brandeis women, the Judges avenged a 20-7 loss to BC earlier this season with a 15-12 victory over the Eagles. They got closer to MIT, but lost by just a point, 14-13, while dropping a 19-8 decision to eighth-ranked Harvard. As she has all season, rookie foil Caroline Mattos (Providence, R.I./LaSalle Acad.) led Brandeis with an 8-1 record, improving to 72-13 overall in 2012-13. The women are 16-11 at the end of the dual-meet part of their schedule.

The Judges return to action on Feb. 23 at home when they compete in the New England Fall Collegiate Championships at home in the Gosman Center.
