Fencers claim 2013 NEIFC title

WALTHAM, Mass. – Competing in the Gosman Athletic Center, the Brandeis University fencing team captured the 2013 New England Intercollegiate Fencing Championship title today. The Judges won both men's and women's overall crowns, three different weapon championships and two individual titles, along with three individual runners-up.

In the overall six-weapon standings, Brandeis finished with 196 points, well ahead of Boston College's 177 points. The Brandeis men outpaced second-place Sacred Heart, 89-79, while the women edged BC, 107-105. MIT was third in the overall (173), men's (75) and women's (98) standings.

In the weapons rankings, Brandeis claimed three different events. Leading the way was the men's saber squad, which posted a tremendous 33-1 mark. The men's foil squad was 31-3 and edged SHU on tiebreakers. The Judges also got a 40-3 record from the women's foil squad to take that weapon as well. Women's epee finished second (35-8) to BC (39-4), while women's saber (32-10) and men's epee (25-10) were in third place each. MIT women's saber had the best record of any squad on the day, going 41-1.

Brandeis had two individual champions and three runners-up on the day, with three squads supplying those five fencers. Junior Julian Cardillo (Medford, Mass./St. Johns Prep), a two-time NCAA qualifier, won the men's foil, while sophomore Noah Berman (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) was second in the event. In the saber, Brandeis had three of the top six finishers, with sophomores Adam Mandel (White Plains, N.Y./Masters School) and Jess Ochs-Willard (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) taking the top spots and classmate Ben Loft (Basking Ridge, N.Y./Ridge) placing sixth. Brandeis's other runner-up came in women's foil with rookie Caroline Mattos (Providence, R.I./LaSalle Acad.) taking second. Senior Zoe Messinger (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) was sixth in the women's saber.
