CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Brandeis fencing teams boasted a combined 9-2 record at the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season. Both teams dropped early decisions to Ivy League rival Brown, but went on to sweep their remaining matches as the men finished 4-1 and the women were 5-1.

The men dropped all three weapons in an 18-9 loss to Brown, but bounced back and lost only two more squad matches the rest of the day, as they defeated Boston College (20-7), Vassar (22-5), Dartmouth (19-8), and Tufts (18-9).

The women breezed past Smith, 25-2, in their opener before a tough loss to Brown, 16-11. The Judges took the foil, 5-4, and were edged by the Bears in the epee, 4-5. The sabre proved to the decisive weapon, as Brown took a 7-2 win. The Judges bounced back with a dramatic 14-13 win over Boston College that came down to the final touch in sabre, with the foil squad also prevailing. Brandeis closed with wins over Vassar (19-8), Dartmouth (18-9) and Tufts (21-6).

The top performers on the day on either side came from the women, where rookie sabre Ashley Jean (Norwood, Mass./Fontbonne Acad.) went 13-4 and sophomore foil Caroline Mattos (Cumberland, R.I./Lasalle Acad.) was 13-2. Junior foil Noah Berman (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) led the men with a 6-2 mark.

After two of the three NFC Meets have been completed, the Judges are in second place in both standings, with the men at 8-2 and the women at 10-2. Both teams trail only Brown. Overall, the women are 13-6 on the season, the men 10-5.
