Fencers hit the West Coast

PASADENA, California – Over the semester break, the Brandeis University fencing team traveled to the West Coast to take part in the CalTech West Invitational. The men came away with a 4-2 record, while the women went 3-4.

The standout squads on the weekend were women's foil, who won six of their seven matches, and women's epee, who went 5-2. Between them, the two squads posted a 6-0 record in matches decided by a 5-4 score. For the men, the saber and foil squads each won four of six showdowns, including three 9-0 wins for the saber squad.

INDIVIDUAL TOP PERFORMANCES - WOMEN

  • The day's top record was turned in by junior epee fencer Liz Feller (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. / Hendrick Hudson), who went 15-4, including 3-0 records against CalTech, Incarnate Word and Northwestern. She was honored as the University Athletic Association Fencer of the Week for her efforts.
  • Sophomore foil fencer Joanne Carminucci (Brewster, N.Y. / North Salem) went 14-5 and did not post a losing record against any of her opponents, going 3-0 against Florida, 2-0 against Caltech, 1-1 against UIC and 2-1 against the other four opponents.
  • Also instrumental to the foil squad's success were rookie Jessica Gets (Morganville, N.J. / Marlborough), who went 11-5; sophomore Renee Pite (Woodbridge, Conn. / Amity Regional), who was 7-2, and senior Chaya Schapiro (Los Angeles, Calif. / Lycee de LA), who was 9-10 as she competed on her home turf in the Los Angeles area.
  • Senior saber fencer Nina Sayles (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / Loomis-Chaffee) had a winning record in the six matches she fenced in to finish at 12-3. She was 3-0 against Northwestern, 2-0 against Incarnate Word and 1-0 against Florida.  

INDIVIDUAL TOP PERFORMANCES – MEN

  • Junior Kyle Berney (Shreveport, La. / Caddo Magnet) led the way for the men's saber squad, going 10-3 with perfect 3-0 records against UCSD and Air Force and a 2-0 mark against Incarnate Word. Berney earned UAA Men's Fencer of the Week for his efforts.
  • Rookie saber Shawn Pyatetsky (Fair Lawn, N.J. / Fair Lawn) lost just once in seven matches.
  • A trio of rookies paced the men's foil squad. Sam Chestna (Middleboro, Mass. / Homeschooled) and Trevor Filseth (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) each went 3-0 against both CalTech and Florida, while Ian Quin (Ramsey, N.J. / Ramsey) was 6-3 overall, including 3-0 against Florida.

  • The Brandeis women return to action on Jan. 25 with their annual dual match with Wellesley College. Both teams head to Brown University for the second Northeast Fencing Conference tournament of the season on Jan. 28.
