Escueta, Shealy honored by UAA, Feb. 15

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University fencers Tony Escueta of Grand Prairie, Texas and Maggie Shealy of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, were named University Athletic Association Fencer of the Week last week for their performances at the Duke Invitational on February 12 and 13.

Escueta, a first-year saber fencer, was honored for the third time this season. He led the Judges with eight wins, going 8-6 overall, in a 2-3 week at the Duke Invitational. He was 3-0 in an 18-9 win over Air Force and 2-1 in a 14-13 win over Johns Hopkins and an 18-9 loss to #9 North Carolina. He also picked up one of the team's only two wins in a 25-2 loss to #3 Penn State. He leads the Brandeis men with 52 wins this season.

Shealy, a junior saber fencer, was recognized for the Brandeis women for the sixth time in 2021-22. Shealy went 11-4 for the Judges, who were 0-5 at the Duke Invitational, with four of the losses coming to nationally-ranked D1 teams. Shealy went 3-0 against #14 North Carolina and #9 Temple and 2-1 against #7 Penn State and unranked Air Force. Her lone losing record was 1-2 against #12 Duke. Shealy has a team-high 81 wins this season.

The Brandeis fencing team will play host to the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Championships this Saturday, February 26th, starting at 8 a.m.

Escueta is a 2021 graduate of Abeka Home School Academy.

Shealy is a 2019 graduate of Chapel Hill East High School.
