WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University fencing team has had five members named to the 2022 United State Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) Division III All-America team. This is the first year that the USFCA has recognized Division III All-Americans, recognizing the top nine performers in each weapon across the Division III institutions that sponsor the sport. The teams were selected by a combination of results during the regular season, at the NCAA Regional meets and the NCAA Championships.

Leading the way for the Judges was junior Maggie Shealy (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), who in addition to her first-team sabre Division III honors was a second-team National Collegiate All-American. Shealy placed eighth at the 2022 NCAA Championships held at the University of Notre Dame in March. Shealy went 14-9 at the NCAAs and was the highest-placing Division III woman at the meet, as well as Brandeis's best-ever finisher in women's sabre. She was 11th at the NCAA Northeast Regional championships and led Brandeis with 81 dual-meet wins during the regular season. Shealy also earned All-America honors as a first-year, when all NCAA qualifiers were honored.

For the men's team, first-year saber fencer Tony Escueta (Grand Prairie, Texas/Abeka Home School Academy) was a second-team Division III All-American after also qualified for the NCAA Championships last month. Escueta finished 22nd at the NCAA championships with six wins, placing fourth among Division III men's sabre fencers. Escueta led the Brandeis men's team with 52 wins during the regular season, and he placed 11th at the NCAA Regionals.

Also earning second-team Division III honors for the men was junior epee fencer Ben Rogak (E. Setauket, N.Y./Ward-Melville). Rogak finished 12th at the NCAA Northeast Regional championships, just missing out on a berth at the national championships. Rogak's 35 wins were third-most on the team in 2022. Rogak also narrowly missed out on NCAA qualifying in 2020 as well, when he was an alternate who was selected to the meet when it was cancelled due to COVID-19.

First-year women's epee fencer Bronwyn Rothman-Hall (San Francisco, Calif. / Ruth Asawa School of the Arts) also earned Division III Second-Team All-America honors. She placed 24th at the Northeast Regional meet, leading the epee squad with 30 wins, fifth-most on the Judges this season.

First-year sabre fencer Anthony Rabinkov (Centennial, Colo. / Cherry Creek) earned honorable-mention Division III All-America honors. He placed 24th at the NCAA Northeast Regionals, posting 28 dual meet wins, fifth-most on the team.

Thanks to the 20 wins provided by Shealy and Escueta at the NCAA Championships, Brandeis placed 17th overall, second among Division III schools. The Judges' five Division III All-Americans are fourth-most honorees.
