BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Senior back Shelton Stewart (Clarendon,
Jamaica) scored the game-winning goal in the ninth minute of play
today to lead the Brandeis University men's soccer team past host
Bridgewater State College, 2-0. With the goal, Stewart became just
the fourth player in Judges history to reach the 100-point plateau
for his career.
Brandeis (6-2) snapped a three-game winless streak against the
Bears with today's victory. After Stewart's goal, which came on a
direct kick, the Judges added an insurance tally in the 80th
minute. Senior Charles Goodhue (Wayland, Mass.) dribbled the ball
along the end line and send a perfect cross to the foot of rookie
Ed Colburn (Dover, Mass.), who one-timed it home for his second
collegiate goal.
Stewart, who now has 101 career points, is the first player to
reach the mark since Mike Novaria '91 (123 career points. Cleveland
Lewis '78 (137 points) and Jeff Steinberg '87 (155 points) are the
school's other two players to have reached the century mark.
Bridgewater State (3-4) had a handful of quality scoring
opportunities during the course of the game. Freshmen Joe Zguro
(East Longmeadow, MA) had a pair of first half shots sail wide of
the goal, while fellow freshman Jon Nutting (Rockland, MA) may have
had the Bears’ best scoring chance early in the second half
but his shot just skimmed outside the far post. Senior Mike Quinn
(Weymouth, MA) also came close to knotting the game up in the
second half as his direct kick zipped around the defensive wall and
just outside the goalpost.
Sophomore keeper Jake Knoll (Gardner, MA) picked up his second
shutout of the season and second in a row for the Judges as he
recorded five saves on the afternoon, all of them coming in the
first half. Bridgewater State junior netminder John Naughton
(Braintree, MA) tallied nine saves in goal for the Bears.
Bridgewater State opens up the MASCAC schedule on Saturday at 11 AM
as the Bears travel to Framingham State College to take on the
Rams. Brandeis travels to Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday to take on
UAA rival Case Western Reserve. Game time is also 11 AM.
