WALTHAM, Mass. – The University of Chicago men's soccer team scored twice in the first six minutes of action as the visiting Maroons defeated the host Brandeis University Judges, 3-1, in University Athletic Association (UAA) play today on Gordon Field.

Chicago (12-5, 4-2 UAA), the No. 25 team in the most recent NSCAA poll, needed just under two minutes to get on the board. Senior forward Brian Standerfer (Winston-Salem, N.C.) sent a perfect corner kick into the box that sophomore midfielder Eric Kirkenmeier (Wheaton, Ill.) headed home for his third goal of the season.

The Maroons doubled their lead in the sixth minute when senior forward Ryan Ehle (Holland, Ohio) send a hard ball along the ground from 25 yards out that slid just inside the post for his eighth of the campaign. Senior midfielder Jim Logan (Overland Park, Kans.) added the assist.

Brandeis (6-8-2, 0-4-2 UAA), despite getting outshot by an 11-2 margin in the first half, cut into the lead with less than five minutes left in the stanza. Off a long throw-in in the 42nd minute, the ball was batted around in the UC box, where it found the foot of rookie back Kayne Ryan (Malden, Mass.). Ryan knocked the ball home for his first collegiate goal.

The Judges got good early pressure in the second half, and about 15 minutes in, leading scorer Ben Premo (Florence, Mass.) had a golden opportunity. Junior midfielder Yoni Litwok (Marlboro, N.J.) sent a long through ball that set Premo up for a one-on-the goalie break, but the ball took an awkward bounce and Premo was unable to get off a shot. Chicago added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when sophomore reserve midfielder Stuart Phelps (Helena, Mont.) scored his second goal of the season on a nice feed from Ehle.

Brandeis senior netminder Pat Makridakis (Mendon, Mass.) made nine saves in the losing effort, while UC junior Keith Crum (Holland, Pa.) had just one save for the victory. The Maroons finished with a 22-7 shot advantage.

The Judges will wrap up their regular season next Saturday against UAA rival New York University at 10:30 a.m., while Chicago hosts Washington University at 11:00 a.m. the same day.
