Brandeis men hang on beat Clark, 3-2

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Brandeis University men's soccer team took a pair of two-goal leads today and hung on defeat rival Clark University, 3-2, in Worcester.

Brandeis (3-0) opened the scoring in the ninth minute when senior Shelton Stewart (Clarendon, Jamaica) scored his third goal of the season. It was also the 35th goal of his career, moving him into a tie for fourth on the school's career scoring list with 94 points. He tied Matt Murphy '98 on the list, and with six more points, Stewart will become just the fourth player in school history to reach the 100-goal plateau.

After the rest of the first half went scoreless, the Judges doubled the lead in the 68th minute on rookie Ben Premo's (Florence, Mass.) team-leading fourth goal of the season. Junior forward Yoni Litwok (Marlboro, N.J.) picked up the assist.

Clark (3-1) did not go quietly, as the Cougars's David Blum tallied in the 78th minute to cut the lead to one. Senior forward Charles Goodhue (Wayland, Mass.) answered six minutes later in the 84th minute on a Premo assist. Blum responded for Clark with just over three minutes left in regulation, but Brandeis senior goalie Pat Makridakis (Mendon, Mass.) held on the rest of the way for his third win of the season. Makridakis finished with three saves, while the Cougars' Matt Talbot had two stops.

With the win, Brandeis improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 1997 season.
