WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore forward Ben Premo (Florence,
Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Brandeis University men's
soccer team past visiting Bridgewater State College, 3-0, on Gordon
Field.
Brandeis (3-2-3) opened the scoring just over five minutes into the
contest. Rookie back Tyler Morrill (Newmarket, N.H.) sent a ball
from deep in the Judges defensive zone over the top of the
Bridgewater State (2-4-1) defense. Premo just managed to stay
onside as he tracked down the ball and shot it off BSC senior
netminder John Naughton (Braintree, Mass.). The Judges landed six
more shots on goal in the first half, but Naughton saved five,
while another was cleared off the line as the Bears kept the
halftime deficit at one.
In the 63rd minute, rookie forward Billy Murphy (Springfield,
Mass.) slotted a through ball that found its way through to Premo.
The sophomore sent it home for his second goal of the game and
sixth of the season. It was Premo's third multiple-goal game this
season and the sixth of his career.
The Judges closed out the scoring in the 81st minute on a play
reminiscent of the first goal. Junior back Brett Fitzgerald
(Hubbardston, Mass.) sent a ball over the Bridgewater State defense
from just beyond the midfield stripe. Senior Mike Snyder (Ashby,
Mass.) chased the ball down before it reached the goal line,
dribbled past Naughton and shot it in from a difficult angle for
his first goal of the season.
The Brandeis defense was stellar, allowing just six shots and only
one after the intermission, while contributing two assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Bracken (No. Andover, Mass.) made two
saves for his third career shutout.
Naughton had six saves, all in the first half, for Bridgewater
State.
Brandeis is next in action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they take
on Case Western Reserve University in their University Athletic
Association opener. Bridgewater State is at MCLA at 2:00 p.m. on
Saturday in a MASCAC contest.
