Brandeis men lose to Carnegie Mellon, 2-0, in UAA action

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Brothers Ryan and Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each scored a goal tonight, one in each half, to lead the visiting Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team past host Brandeis University, 2-0, in University Athletic Association play on Gordin Field.

Carnegie Mellon (10-2, 3-0 UAA) got on the board just 87 seconds into the contest. Rookie midfielder Jonathan Simon (Malvern, Pa.) got in deep behind the Brandeis (5-5-3, 0-3 UAA) and sent a cross that senior Jonathan Browne tapped to freshman brother Ryan, who one-timed it home. It was Ryan's fourth goal of the season.

The Tartans doubled the score in the 51st minute on a corner kick by senior midfielder Sean Filipovitz (Cleveland, Ohio). Senior Will Schlough (Stratham, N.H.) headed it to Jonathan Browne, who headed it past Brandeis rookie netminder Taylor Bracken (No. Andover, Mass.)

Brandeis only put four shots on goal, even as they stepped up the pressure later in the second half. Two hard shots in the 81st minute were blocked by CMU defenders, while a shot by sophomore midfielder Kevin Murphy in the last 30 seconds of play hit the crossbar.

Tartan sophomore Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) had four saves for Carnegie Mellon, the No. 16 team in the d3kicks.com national poll, while Bracken had five stops for the Judges.

Both teams continue their UAA weekends on Sunday as the Judges host Emory, the No. 17 team in the country according to d3kicks.com, while CMU heads to No. 15 NYU.
