WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team won its first-ever meeting with the Newbury College Nighthawks, 2-1, on Gordon Field tonight.

Brandeis (5-4-3) scored a pair of first-half goals that stood up. Sophomore forward Ben Premo (Florence, Mass.) opened the scoring in the 17th minute with his team-leading 10th goal of the season, matching his total from his rookie campaign. Senior Mike Snyder (Ashby, Mass.) sent a cross from outside the box, where rookie forward Patrick Metelus (Cambridge, Mass.) deflected it to Premo for the tally.

The Judges got the eventual game-winner less than five minutes later. Senior back Scott Zackaroff (Bath, Ohio) sent a nice chip over the Newbury defense that was corralled by classmate Yuval Ezer (Netanya, Israel). Ezer sent a rocket from the left of the box to the right netting for his second goal of the campaign.

Newbury (3-7-1), despite getting outshot, 27-9, on the evening, didn't go away. The Nighthawks failed to convert a penalty kick five minutes after Ezer's goal, but Newbury was able to cut into the lead in the second half. Junior Chad D'Ancona (Wantage, N.J.) took a ball from the midfield stripe and accelerated, carried it straight ahead into the box, where he beat Brandeis keeper Josh Bellet (Wayne, N.J.) to spoil the rookie's shutout bid.

Bellet made four saves in his first collegiate start to pick up the victory. Junior Brian Picanco (Lowell, Mass.) suffered the loss despite eight saves that kept his team in the contest.

Brandeis hosts a key University Athletic Association (UAA) match at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night against Carnegie Mellon University. Newbury is at Rivier College on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
