Brandeis men fall to Wentworth, 1-0, despite 22-9 shot advantage

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team controlled the offensive zone for much of the game, but the Wentworth Institute of Technology netted the contest's only goal in the 33rd minute today as the Leopards took a 1-0 decision on Gordon Field.

Brandeis (1-1-1) outshot Wentworth (1-0), 22-9, including 11-5 in the first half and 11-4 in the second. WIT rookie goalkeeper Mike Gregory (Rockaway, N.J.) made six saves on the Judges' shots to earn the shutout.

The Leopards tallied the game's only goal off a free kick. Senior back Joe Carroll (Lebanon, Conn.) sent the ball in the box from near midfield. Sophomore forward Matt Martins (Bristol, R.I.) got a head on it, flicking it to the far post, where senior forward Dan Marra (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) put it home at the 32:10 mark.

Brandeis nearly responded 62 seconds later, but sophomore forward Ben Premo's (Florence, Mass.) rocket from just inside the box was nicely anticipated and knocked over the crossbar by Carroll.

Brandeis rookie Taylor Bracken (No. Andover, Mass.) made three saves but suffered his first collegiate loss.

The Judges are next in action Saturday against Clark University at 1 p.m., while Wentworth plays its home opener against Endicott at noon.
