WALTHAM, Mass. -- The University of Chicago men's soccer team
scored the game's only goal in the 38th minute as the visiting
Maroons defeated host Brandeis University, 1-0, in a University
Athletic Association (UAA) contest tonight on Gordon Field.
Chicago (6-5-1, 1-1-1 UAA) got the game-winning goal at the 37:16
mark. Rookie midfielder Ryan Fitzgerald (Beaverton, Ore.) sent a
long ball to classmate Alex Clifford (Houston, Texas). Clifford
collected, beat a defender and hit the ball to the left side of the
net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Brandeis (6-5-2, 0-3-0 UAA) outshot Chicago, 8-5 in the first half
and 13-9 overall, but the Judges were stymied by Chicago rookie
netminder Steven Baron (Chalfont, Pa.). The Judges' best attempt
came right at the end of the first half, when junior foward Ben
Premo's (Florence, Mass.) header was cleared off the line by UC
defender Jan-Michael Guerra (Plano, Texas). Baron then saved a shot
by Judge sophomore midfielder Kevin Murphy (Monson, Mass.) just
before time expired in the first half.
Brandeis sophomore keeper Taylor Bracken (No. Andover, Mass.) had a
couple of nice saves early in the first half to preserve the tie.
Bracken and Baron each finished with four saves.
Brandeis hosts UAA rival Washington University Sunday at 11 a.m.,
while Chicago travels to NYU for a conference showdown at the same
time. WashU defeated NYU today, 2-1.
