WALTHAM, Mass. – Wheaton College rookie Kyle Sye (Acton,
Mass.) made his first collegiate goal count, scoring the overtime
winner in a 1-0 victory over Brandeis University on Gordon Field in
non-conference men's soccer action tonight.
Brandeis (2-2-2) and Wheaton (5-2-2) played very evenly in
regulation. The Judges owned a 15-13 shot advantage, including a
4-2 margin in shots on goal, while corner kicks were even at four
each.
Wheaton rookie goalkeeper Chris Smart (Brookfield, Conn.) made four
saves, two in each half, including two fine stops on Brandeis
junior Ben Premo (Florence, Mass.) in the 53rd and 55th minutes.
Smart earned his first collegiate shutout with the win.
Brandeis sophomore netminder Taylor Bracken (No. Andover, Mass.)
had two stops in regulation, one in each half. He preserved the tie
with a save on Lyon senior Dan Chong (Miami, Fla.) in the 72nd
minute.
In the extra session, Wheaton scored the winning goal on a
counter-attack. Rookie midfielder Yuri Moreira (Marlborough, Mass.)
dribbled the ball to the center of the field and fed Sye, who
buried the shot past a diving Bracken.
Brandeis is next in action next Thursday at Bridgewater State
College at 3:30 p.m., while Wheaton takes on MIT in a NEWMAC
contest Saturday at 1 p.m.
