CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Brandeis men's soccer team battled to its
second-straight draw in University Athletic Association (UAA)
action tonight as the Judges and the University of Chicago Maroons
each scored unusual second-half goals en route to a 1-1 draw.
Brandeis (6-5-2, 0-1-2 UAA) and Chicago (4-6-3, 0-2-1 UAA) were
scoreless at the half. The Maroons owned a 7-5 shooting advantage
before the intermission.
The Judges got on the board first in the 66th minute. Junior
midfielder Alex Zenerovitz (Acton, Mass.) sent a
cross into the box that was headed into the net by a Chicago
defender for an own goal. The Brandeis defense stiffened and looked
headed towards their first UAA win until the 88th minute. A Maroon
attacker was pulled down in the box and a red card was handed out
to Brandeis senior Kevin Murphy (Monson, Mass.).
UC's Alex Clifford converted the PK to knot the game at 1-1.
Brandeis had a chance to steal the game with just six seconds left
on the clock. After a yellow card was assessed to the Maroons,
junior midfielder Corey Bradley (Holyoke, Mass.)
took the free kick from just over 20 yards out. His ball hit the
inside of the post and ricocheted out as time expired. Even though
the Judges were a man down in the overtime, the game was evenly
played in the final 20 minutes, with both squads getting
opportunities to break the tie.
Sophomore Matt Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.) played all
110 minutes for the Judges and made three saves, while Chris Giusto
had seven stops for the hosts. Brandeis owned a 20-12 advantage in
shots, including 15-5 in the second half and overtime.
Brandeis continues its UAA road trip on Sunday afternoon when they
take on 21st-ranked Washington University in St. Louis.
