WALTHAM, Mass. -- Carnegie Mellon junior Ricky Griffin (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) scored once in each half today to spoil the final regular-season home contest for the host Brandeis University men's soccer team, 2-1. With the win, CMU improves to 13-2-1, 4-2-0 in the University Athletic Association, while the Judges fall to 8-8-2, 0-4-2 UAA.
After a scoreless first 40 minuets of play, Griffin got the Tartans on the board at the 40:56 mark. Junior Keith Haselhoff (White Oak, Pa.) served the ball into the box, and Griffin was able to beat Brandeis rookie goalkeeper Sean O'Hare (Southampton, Mass.) to the ball and poke it into the empty net for his 13th goal of the season. Griffin doubled the Tartans' lead in the 58th minute. Junior Patrick Lutz (Lebanon, Pa.) got the ball just inside the box and drew O'Hare out. He crossed the ball to Griffin, who deposited it for his second of the game.
Brandeis senior Ben Premo (Florence, Mass.) got the Judges back in the game with his 10th goal of the campaign in the 71st minute. The goal was set up by rookie Alexander Farr (Nahant, Mass.), who dribbled through space and sent the ball towards the net. It eluded the hands of CMU senior netminder Matthew Bazin (Chatham, N.J.) and Premo pounced to cut the lead in half. Brandeis put pressure on the rest of the stanza, but were unable to equalize.
Carnegie Mellon outshot Brandeis, 23-5, but O'Hare kept the Judges in the contest with a career-high 11 saves. Bazin had one first-half stop for the Tartans. The game was the final regular-season home game for Premo and senior midfielder/back Kevin Murphy (Monson, Mass.). The Judges wrap up the regular season next weekend at NYU in a UAA contest.
