WALTHAM, Mass. - The Brandeis University men's soccer team scored once in each half today as the Judges defeated visiting Springfield College, 2-0, under the lights of Gordon Field. Brandeis improves to 7-6-2 with the win, while Springfield falls to 5-8-2.
The Judges opened the scoring midway through the first half. Senior forward Ben Premo (Florence, Mass.) took advantage of a misplay by the Springfield goalkeeper. After the ball slipped through his hands, Premo deposited it in the back of the net at 27:21 for his ninth goal of the season. He now stands alone in fifth place on Brandeis's career lists with 37 goals and 95 points.
Brandeis got an insurance goal early in the second half. Junior midfielder Patrick Metelus (Pernier, Haiti) chased down a ball on the Pride end line. He drew out the goalie and sent a ball across the goal mouth. Junior midfielder Jaime Batista (Westford, Mass.) was there at the 51:25 mark to put it home. It is the second-straight game with a goal for Batista.
Springfield owned a 16-6 shot advantage, but Brandeis sophomore Matt Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.) made five saves for his third shutout of the season and his career. Springfield netminder Kevin Leahy (Cheshire, Conn.) had two stops in the losing effort. The Pride also owned a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks, while Brandeis was flagged for seven offsides.
With the win, Brandeis snaps a seven-match winless streak. They had gone 0-5-2 in that stretch. The win is the first in exactly a month. The Judges will go for two in a row next Tuesday at Lasell College at 3:00 p.m. Springfield's next contest is a week from today at Western Connecticut State University at 7:00 p.m.
