PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Junior netminder Matt Lynch (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) tied a career-high with eight saves and the Brandeis defense kept the University Athletic Association's leading scorer Ricky Griffin off the board, but host Carnegie Mellon made a ninth-minute goal stand up as the No. 9 Tartans blanked the Judges, 1-0. With the loss, Brandeis falls to 4-7-1 (1-2-0 UAA), while CMU improves to 12-1 (3-0 UAA).
Brandeis, which suffered a one-goal loss for the fifth time this season, including a 2-1 decision to No. 6 Rochester last weekend, gave up the game's only goal early in the contest. Carnegie Mellon senior midfielder Ryan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa.) threaded a ball to classmate Pat Lutz (Lebanon, Pa.). Lutz dribbled past a defender and fired a shot high inside the near post for his seventh goal of the season.
That was all the Tartan defense needed, as the hosts outshot Brandeis, 17-6, including 9-1 in shots on goal. Sophomore Luke Teece (Tucson, Ariz./University) notched the only shot on goal in the 38th minute. CMU senior Maks Gurghin (Cupertino, Calif.) made one save for the shutout.
Brandeis heads to Atlanta to take on Emory University on Sunday morning at 11 a.m., while Carnegie Mellon will play host to NYU at the same time.
