Farr nets late game-winner as men's soccer reaches .500, 3-2, over Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. (courtesy CSC sports info) -- The Brandeis men's soccer team got back to the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 3-2 win at Colby-Sawyer College, extending their winning streak to three games. Sophomore forward Alexander Farr (Nahant, Mass./St. Johns Prep), moments after coming off the bench, scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute. It was his fourth goal of the season, and second game-winner.

Colby-Sawyer had the first chance of the match to score when rookie Oscar Svensson (Norrkoping, Sweden) received a service off a corner kick and flicked a header into what he thought was a wide open net. To his surprise, a Brandeis defender was waiting for the ball and saved it with his chest to keep the contest scoreless.

Brandeis had their first opportunity in the 22nd minute. After a foul was called on Colby-Sawyer inside the 18 yard box, the Judges were awarded a penalty kick. Rookie forward Joe Eisenbies (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) shot the ball to the right side of the net but Chargers keeper Chris Feltes (Manchester, N.H.) was up to the task and came up with one of his six saves on the day.

The Chargers struck first in the 23rd minute when freshman Kurt Carvalho (Plymouth, Mass.) took a free kick near midfield and sent the ball towards the box. Senior Justin Varney (Belfast, Maine) gathered the ball and ripped it past the dive of Brandeis junior keeper Matt Lynch (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth).

Colby-Sawyer could not celebrate long as Brandeis took the kickoff after the goal and jolted down the field. Senior midfielder Corey Bradley (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) found the equalizer 12 seconds later on an assist from sophomore forward Luke Teece (Tucson, Ariz./University).

The Judges gained a 2-1 advantage in the 42nd minute after Bradley sent a nice service towards the net from the right flank. Rookie Eric Root (Montpelier, Vt./East Calais) controlled the ball at the far side of the net and fired it past the Colby-Sawyer keeper for his first collegiate goal

Colby-Sawyer tied the game midway through the second frame when Svensson took a free kick from 30 yards out. His shot struck the crossbar and bounced back into play. Rookie Jon Mack (Melrose, Mass.) came flying in head first and connected with the ball sending it into the back of the net.

An evenly played affair shifted in the Judges direction with under ten minutes to play. Farr received a perfect ball at his head from rookie forward Sam Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass./No. Attleboro) for the easy flick into the net. Lynch finished with four saves to earn the victory, while Feltes had six stops for the Chargers.

The Judges (4-4-1) will host Rochester on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in their UAA home opener. Colby-Sawyer (1-10) resumes TCCC play on Saturday, with a home match against Eastern Nazarene at 12:30pm.
