Men's soccer scores first but falls to No. 11 Rochester, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. - University of Rochester senior back Phil Proud (Glen Carbon, Ill/Edwardsville) had two second-half assists to rally the 11th-ranked Yellowjackets past the host Brandeis University Judges, 2-1, in a University Athletic Association contest on Gordon Field tonight.

In an evenly played first half, it was Brandeis (4-5-1, 1-1-0 UAA) who struck first. Rookie forward Matt Peabody (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) sent a terrific through ball that freed sophomore Alexander Farr (Nahant, Mass./St. Johns Prep). Farr walked in on UR senior netminder Michael Peacock (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) and sent the ball home for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. The Judges had two more shots on net in the half, but Peacock made the stops as the Judges took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Rochester (8-0-2, 2-0-0 UAA) answered in the 70th minute. The 'Jackets worked the ball around the field to Proud, who found senior forward JJ Dennstedt (Victor, N.Y./Victor) open just outside the box. Dennstedt ripped a shot that beat Brandeis junior netminder Matt Lynch (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) for his sixth goal of the season, tops on the squad.

Brandeis nearly went back on top in the 74th minute. Junior forward Luke Teece (Tucson, Ariz./University) was able to beat the Rochester defense and Peacock to a loose ball deep in the zone, but Teece just missed the angle, putting the ball just wide of an open goalmouth into the side netting.

UR, which outshot Brandeis, 10-4 in the second half, claimed its first lead with just 8:28 left in the contest. Proud got the play started once again, taking a free kick from about 35 yards out in the middle of the field. Senior forward Scott Cady (Columbine, Colo./Columbine) was there to get a head on the ball and give the visitors the lead.

Peacock finished with four saves in the winning effort, while Lynch suffered the loss despite a season-high seven stops.

Brandeis is next in action next Friday night at 5:00 p.m. in a UAA match at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, while Rochester is at the University of Chicago the same afternoon.
