SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (courtesy Springfield College sports information) -- Brandeis sophomore reserve forward Luke Teece (Tucson, Ariz./University) scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute this evening as the Judges defeated host Springfield College, 3-1, to snap a four-match losing streak. Brandeis improves to 5-8-1 on the season, while the Pride fall to 4-11-1.
Springfield controlled much of the possession in the game, but
the Judges used quick counter attacks and skillful play on the
wings en route to the victory.
Brandeis jumped on the board first in the 17th minute. After
sophomore back David McCoy (Weymouth,
Mass./Catholic Memorial) let loose a rocket from the top of the
box, Springfield goalie Chris Walton made an impressive save to
turn away the shot, but was unable to corral the loose ball. Judge
sophomore forward Alexander Farr (Nahant,
Mass./St. Johns Prep) gathered the rebound and blasted a shot over
the head of Walton and into the back of the net for the Judges'
first goal. It was Farr's team-leading seventh of the season and
his fourth in the last six contests. The assist was the first point
of McCoy's career.
Teece put Brandeis up 2-0 in the 59th minute when he got loose on
a breakaway and slipped his shot into the lower right hand corner.
The Judges wasted no time netting another goal as at the 63:01
mark, a junior midfielder Kyle Gross (Medway,
Mass./Medway) headed home a Corey Bradley
(Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) cross just inside the right post for
Gross's first of the season.
Springfield got into the scoring action in the 72nd minute when
James Ashcroft sent a beautiful ball into the box for Plourd.
Plourd then bounced his shot above a sprawling Matt
Lynch (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) to cut Brandeis lead to
two.
The Pride would get no closer though as it dropped its
fifth-straight match. Walton finished the game with five saves as
he faced 17 shots in the contest. Lynch totaled four saves on 13
shots as he recorded the victory.
The Judges are next in action in their nonconference finale next Tuesday evening against Lasell at 7 p.m. before three more home UAA games.
