WALTHAM, Mass. - In a University Athletic Association doubleheader tonight, the Washington University soccer teams swept host Brandeis University on Gordon Field. The WashU men earned a 1-0 win on a 13th-minute penalty kick, while the Bear women, ranked No. 9 in the nation in Division III, scored once in each half for a 2-0 win.
In the opener, Brandeis (6-9-1, 1-4 UAA) outshot visiting Washington (9-5-3, 3-2 UAA) by a 14-12 margin, though the Bears owned a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. The lone goal in the contest came at the 12:08 mark on a penalty kick. After a Brandeis defender was whistled for a hand-ball in the box, Washington senior forward John Hengel (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette Univ. High) calmly deposited the ball past Judge junior goalkeeper Matt Lynch (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) for his seventh goal of the season.
Washington senior netminder John Smelcer (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) stopped Brandeis seniors Corey Bradley (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) and Mike Silberstein (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) late in the first half, but those were the only two shots on goal for the Judges. Lynch, who finished with five saves, had a pair of stops in the first five minutes of the second half on WashU junior John Duncan (Joplin, Mo./Joplin) and Hengel, but those were the last shots on goal of the contest, as much of the action was in the midfield. Brandeis sees its two-game winning streak halted, while WashU snaps a three-match skid of its own.
