WALTHAM, Mass. — Brandeis University men's soccer captain Tyler Savonen of Orleans, Mass., has been selected as a Capital One Academic All-American, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Savonen was selected to the Academic All-America Division III third team. He Brandeis's first CoSIDA Academic All-American since 2012 and the first for the Judges' men's soccer program since 2003. Savonen owns a 3.60 grade-point average as an economics and business double major. He is vice president of Brandeis's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has been named to the Dean's List every semester and the Academic All-UAA team three times.

On the field, Savonen was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) 2014 Most Valuable Player, after finishing second in the conference in scoring with nine goals and two assists for 20 points. He was a three-time UAA Player of the Week honoree this season who had three game-winning goals, including two in conference action.

Savonen has guided the Judges to a 19-2 record and their third-straight berth in the NCAA Division III tournament. Ranked fifth in Division III entering the tournament, the Judges defeated Husson University, 3-0, and Bowdoin College, 1-0, to make their way to the Sweet 16 for the third straight time. The team has tied a program record with 19 wins and set a new mark with 16 shutouts.

Brandeis faces Amherst College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Oneonta, N.Y., in the third round of the NCAA Tournament

Savonen is a 2011 graduate of Nauset Regional High School.
