WALTHAM, Mass. – For the third game in a row, Brandeis University men's soccer senior captain Jake Picard (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) delivered a game-winning goal as the Judges handed visiting WPI their first loss, 1-0, in double overtime on Gordon Field tonight.

After the teams went back and forth in the first overtime period, Picard netted the game-winner 1:20 into the second frame. The play developed on the right side of the field, finding its way into a scrum inside the 18-yard box. Sophomore Christian Hernandez (Revere, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) flicked it into the open field on far side and Picard deposited it into the right corner of the net for his second overtime game-winner in a row.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first half, Brandeis senior back Conor Lanahan (Avon, Conn./Avon) nearly opened the scoring with a late header off a corner, but WPI's Riley Doherty cleared the ball off the line.
  • The Judges' best chance in the first 90 minutes came from senior Chris Bradley (E. Brunswick, N.J./E. Brunswick), who hit the right joint between the crossbar and post in the 68th minute.
  • Brandeis sophomore Ben Woodhouse (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) made his first save in the 94th minute, a diving stop to his right when WPI's Reese Peterson (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) caught Woodhouse off guard directing traffic in front of the net.
  • The Engineers were flagged for offside on a counterattack in the 93rd minute that could have produced a breakaway.
  • Just over two minutes later, Judge sophomore midfielder Christian Hernandez (Revere, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) tracked back to help thwart Brendan Nemes (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake Regional).
