WALTHAM, Massachusetts — The Brandeis University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss tonight on Gordon Field, as the Judges went up 4-1 in the 60th minute before the visiting Wheaton College Lyons came back to win it in overtime. With the loss, the Judges fall to 3-3-1, while the Lyons improve to the 6-4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The overtime goal came after a flurry of attempted shots and passes in front of the Brandeis goal. The ball deflected off of a Brandeis defender to Lyons junior Louis Chavez (Porterville, Calif./Northfield Mount Hermon) who buried a shot that Brandeis junior keeper Ben Woodhouse (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) could not get to in time.

IN REGULATION

• Wheaton opened up the scoring in the 21st minute, when junior Amara Sesay (Bronx, N.Y. / Martin Luther King) put home a penalty kick.

• Brandeis answered quickly and emphatically, however, with a goal in the 23rd minute from rookie Dylan Hennessy (New York, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) that went straight in off a free kick and another in the 24th minute from sophomore Andrew Allen (Norfolk, Mass /King Phillip Regional), who put it in to Lyons' junior keeper James Bailey's (Groton, Mass./Groton Dunstable Regional) left from the top of the box. It was Hennessy's first and Allen's second of the season.

• Wheaton made a goalie change with the score 2-1 in the 34th minute, when junior Erik Wisniewski (Salisbury, Mass./Berwick Acad.) replaced classmate Bailey.

• Brandeis added another in the 36th minute, when junior Patrick Flahive (Chatham, Ill./ Worcester Acad.) put his second goal of the season in off of a throw-in and a deflection. Senior Josh Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass. / Worcester Acad.) had the assist.

• The Judges kept it going in the second half, when junior Evan Jastremski (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) cut through the Lyons' defense in the 60th minute to put in his first of the year

• After Brandeis' fourth goal, Wheaton came out playing fast and furious; they scored three goals in under five minutes to tie up the game

• In the 62nd minute, Sesay sent a cross in from the left of the goal and it deflected in off of a Brandeis defender for an own goal.

• In the 65th minute, Chavez sent home a cross from freshman Chris Brubaker (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) to make it 4-3

• In the 68th minute, Sesay tied it at 4-4 with his second of the game and sixth of the season, as he got just enough of the ball for it to roll over the goal line before any Brandeis player could get to it.

• The rest of regulation was relatively uneventful, with neither team getting a significant chance to break the tie.

IN OVERTIME

• Brandeis had the only shot of the short overtime, in the 92nd minute.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Brandeis outshot the Lyons 18-11, including 9-2 in the second half.

• In a statistical oddity, Wheaton scored three goals on two shots in the second half, because of the own goal.

• Woodhouse made five saves, while Bailey and Wisniewski made three apiece.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

• The game was the fourth OT contest in a row for the Judges, who are 0-3-1 in that stretch after winning their first three in a row.

• Brandeis begins UAA conference play on Saturday, October 1 at 1:30 at Carnegie Mellon University.

• Wheaton hosts conference rival Babson on the same day at noon.
