CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (taken from an MIT press release) -- Brandeis men's soccer junior Patrick Flahive (Chatham, Ill./Worcester Acad.) deposited the game winning goal into the back of the net with 47 seconds left in regulation tonight as the Judges defeated host MIT, 2-1, on Wednesday evening at Steinbrenner Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Just 6:30 into the game Brandeis got on the board when sophomore Andrew Allen (Norfolk, Mass./King Phillip Regional) sent a great cross to senior Evan Jastremski (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield), who poked the ball with the tip of his foot past MIT keeper Cole Hoffer (Tucson, Ariz.) for the early 1-0 lead.
- MIT responded though at the 14:00 minute mark as senior Kareem Itani (Dallas, Texas) registered his third goal of the season on a shot at the top of the 18-yard box. Itani gathered the ball off an attempt that was initially headed away by the Brandeis back line. Sophomore Binh Le (Portage, Mich.) began the opportunity when he took the free kick from near the 10-yard line closest to the far sideline and tried to send the ball towards the net.
- Engineers sophomore Thad Daguilh (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) nearly gave MIT the about 13-minutes later when he shot the ball from about the 15-yard line, but Judge junior keeper Ben Woodhouse (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) leapt and punched the ball away from the net to keep the game even at 1-1 headed to the break.
- Hoffer twice he came up huge to leave the game tied. At the 63:43 mark, Brandeis freshman Tyler Poritzky (Weston, Mass./Weston) curled a shot towards Hoffer, but a diving attempt stopped the ball from going in. Then with about 23-minutes to play, Jastremski was awarded a penalty kick, but Hoffer made a huge diving save to his right to keep the Judges off the board.
- With just 47 ticks left on the clock, Flahive received the ball from classmate Christian Hernandez (Revere, Mass./Lawrence Academy) from across the field and fired the ball from about the 20-yard line and into the back left corner of the net to give the visiting Judges the 2-1 non-conference victory.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
- The statistics were nearly identical tonight as both teams registered 15 shots and five corner kicks.
- Hoffer (3-5-0) made four saves in net for the Engineers, while Woodhouse improved to 4-3-2 with three saves tonight for the Judges.
- The Judges had gone to overtime in each of their past five games and were winless in that stretch (0-3-2) after a 3-0 start.

- Brandeis returns home on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. to take on Case Western Reserve in a University Athletic Association contest. At halftime of the Homecoming game, the Judges will honor the 40th anniversary of their 1976 NCAA Division III Championship team.
