#4 men drop 2-0 decision at Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. (courtesy of Babson Sports Information)Junior Alex Crompton (Killington, Vt.) and first-year Ross Shellow (Miami, Fla.) both scored after halftime to help Babson College defeat fourth-ranked Brandeis University, 2-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With the win, Babson improves to 1-0-2, while Brandeis slips to 2-2-0 on the year.

Seniors Jackson Greenspan (Meriden, N.H.) and Noah Parker (Hampden, Maine) and juniors Chris Czarnecki (Baltimore, Md.) and Ben Holman (Ashland, Mass.) all recorded an assist for the Beavers. Fellow junior Steven Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.) made all seven of his saves over the final 45 minutes to record his second consecutive clean sheet.

Junior Greg Irwin (Passaic, N.J.) made four saves for the Judges.

Babson recorded the only two shots on goal in the opening half and Irwin kept the game deadlocked with a diving stop on Czarnecki's scoring bid off a rebound in the 30th minute. The Green and White got on the board in the 57th minute after Crompton earned a foul near midfield. Parker found Greenspan with a long free kick into the box and Crompton ran onto his header across the goal mouth at the back post for his first goal of the year and a 1-0 advantage.

The Beavers doubled their lead just over 11 minutes later following a build-up down the left flank. Following a give-and-go with senior Ian Fromhein (Osterville, Mass.), Holman hit a low cross into the box that Czarnecki laid off for Shellow, who drilled a shot past Irwin from the center of the box for his first career marker.

Brandeis first-year Isaac Mukala (Malden, Mass.) saw his header deflect off the crossbar and out of danger in the 70th minute, and the Judges were stymied by a stout Babson defense down the stretch. Heintzelman made four of his seven saves over the final 12 minutes.

Both teams finished with 12 shots and the Beavers held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson hosts Lesley at 4 p.m., while Brandeis visits WPI at 7 p.m.
