WALTHAM, Mass. -- Brandeis University goalkeepers Aiden Guthro of Newburyport, Massachusetts, and Hannah Bassan of Aventura, Florida, have been selected as the University Athletic Association Soccer Defensive Players of the Week for men's and women's soccer for the week ending September 26th.

Guthro, a junior, was honored by the UAA for the second time this season. In the Judges' lone game of last week, Guthro tied his career-high with seven saves to earn his second collegiate shutout in a 2-0 win over Bates College on Saturday, September 26. He made two especially outstanding stops in the second half on Bobcat free kicks. With his seven saves, Guthro has 28 total on the season, ranking second in the UAA. His 668 minutes also rank second, while his .800 save percentage is fifth in the UAA. Guthro's 0.94 goals-against average is seventh in the UAA, but he has allowed more than one goal in just one of his seven starts.

The Judges own a record of 2-4-1 this season. They meet Clark University on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. before taking on Carnegie Mellon University Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Pittsburgh in the UAA opener for both teams.

Guthro is a 2019 graduate of Newburyport High School.

Bassan, a first-year, earned her first career UAA Defensive Player of the Week honors. In her only game of the week, Bassan made three saves as the Judges blanked UMass Boston, 1-0, on Wedneday, September 22. She had two stops in the first half and one in the second in recording her second solo shutout of the season and the team's fourth overall. Bassan's three saves in the game gave her 19 on the season, second in the UAA. She also ranks fifth in the league in save percentage (.792) and minutes played (580). Bassan's 0.78 goals-against average is eighth in the league.

With a 4-1-2 record, the Brandeis women's soccer team was ranked #2 in their region and #22 in the nation in Division III in the latest United Soccer Coaches rankings. The Judges take on Lesley University, ranked fifth in region, this evening at 7 p.m. before traveling to 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh on Saturday for an 11 a.m. showdown.

Bassan is a 2021 graduate of NSU University High School.
