WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams open the 2014-15 campaign today against the Wheaton College Lyons. The Judges had 10 individual race wins on the afternoon, but Wheaton captured both head-to-head dual meets. Brandeis lost 151.5 to 136.5 on the men's side, while the women fell, 191-94.

The 15-point difference in the men's meet came down to diving. With both Brandeis and Wheaton winning seven of the 14 swimming events, the Lyons outpointed the Judges 26-0 in the two diving events.

The Judges had three individuals combine for their seven wins. Six races were captured by Brandeis's two co-captains.

Senior Max Fabian (Keene, N.H./Oak Meadow) had his usual outstanding performance in the distance freestyle events. In the 1,000, Fabian was a 27-second winner over rookie teammate Taku Harada (Henrico, Va. / Mills E. Godwin) with a time of 10:13.36. In his other two wins in the 500 free and the 200 butterfly, Fabian defeated another newcomer, Zach Diamond (Staten Island, N.Y. / Staten Island Academy). Fabian was three seconds faster in the 500 ( 4:58.93 to 5:01.15) and less than two seconds ahead in the fly (2:02.99 to 2:04.88).

Junior Brian Luk (Hong Kong / Northfield Mount Hermon) took the two freestyle sprints over Wheaton foes. He swam 22.42 seconds in the 50 for a 0.27-second win and 48.40 in the 100 to win by 2.66 seconds. Luk also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.71 seconds, with a margin of victory of 0.86 seconds.

Brandeis's final win came in the 200 freestyle, where rookie Cameron Braz (Monson, Mass./Monson) helped the Judges sweep the free events with a 0.30-second victory and time of 1:51.14. Braz was also second to Luk in the 100.

Brandeis returns to action next weekend for the University of Rochester Invitational.
