Judges enjoy meet in Puerto Rico

TRUJILLO ALTO, Puerto Rico -- The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams competed at the 2015 Copa Coqui meet on January 4 while on their annual winter break trip to Puerto Rico. The Brandeis men finished in ninth place with 28 points on the strength of one individual scorer and a couple of high-finishing relays. 

The lone individual to register points for the Judges was sophomore Cameron Braz (Monson, Mass./Monson), who finished in 15th place in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 29.60 seconds. Braz was third among Division III competitors in the event. 

Braz also helped a pair of relays finish among the top 16. In the 500-meter free relay, the Judges placed 11th in 4:33.51. Rookie Joey Barr (Deerfield, Ill. / Deerfield) led off, with classmate Abu Batjargal (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) swimming second. Braz was the third leg, while sophomore Danny Icaza (Panama, Republica de Panama / The International School of Panama) swam the anchor leg.

In the 200-meter medley relay, the Judges had two scoring teams. In 13th place with a time of 2:00.80, were sophomore Edan Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) in the backstroke, rookie Adib Milani (Vienna, Va. / Marshall) swimming breaststroke, junior Brian Luk (Hong Kong/Northfield Mount Hermon) in the butterfly and Braz swimming the freestyle anchor leg. Right behind them in 14th place with a time of 2:01.92 were sophomore Eb Weber (Murray, Ky. / Murray), rookie Rich Avrutsky (Needham, Mass / Needham), rookie Danny Smyda (Acworth, Ga. / North Cobb) and Batjargal. 

The Judges return to New England on Friday and swim at home against Colby College on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
