Men's swimming picks up third win of season, 180-97, at Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Brandeis University men's swimming and diving team earned their third win of the season today, defeating host Trinity College, 180-97. The Judge women, swimming shorthanded, were unable to complete the sweep as they fell to the Bantams, 109-137. The men improve to 3-7 on the season, while the women dip to 1-9.

The Brandeis men were bolstered by a pair of triple winners. As they have been for much of the season, the top performers were senior Max Fabian (Keene, N.H./Oak Meadow) and junior Brian Luk (Hong Kong/Northfield Mount Hermon). Fabian won the 1,000 yard freestyle with ease, defeating teammate Taku Harada (Henrico, Va. / Mills E. Godwin) by 10 seconds with a mark of 10:17.93. Fabian topped teammate Joey Barr (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) by more than five seconds in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.42. Finally, he won the 400-yard individual medley by 3.6 seconds over teammate Zach Diamond (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Acad.) with a time of  4:25.66.

Luk won both freestyle sprints, taking the 50 in 22.17 seconds and the 100 in 49.07 seconds. In the 50, he topped teammates Abu Bhatarjal (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and Evan Thom (Natick, Mass./Natich), who touched simultaneously in 23.45 seconds. Luk also won a butterfly sprint, taking the 50 in 24.84 seconds.

The Judges also got a lift from rookie diver Sam Zucker (Omaha, Neb. / Anderson). Zucker earned his first-ever event victories, with a score of 204.75 in the 1-meter and 194.85 in the 3-meter. Diamond earned an individual victory in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.62.

On the women's side, Brandeis had several competitors out with injury, leading to their 28-point loss. Sophomore Joanna Murphy (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) had two wins on the day, though only one counted for points. Murphy captured the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 5:31.07. She also had the fastest time in the 1,000 at 11:04.51. Murphy did earn two second-place finishes as well, in the 200 free (2:05.29) and the 400 individual medley (5:08.56).

Brandeis's other two wins came from rookies. Yi Sul Richter (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Vista Ridge), who was the top scoring performer in the 1,000 with a time of 11:25.85, a five-second margin of victory. Sherry Tu (Guangdong, China / Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women) captured the 50 butterfly with a time of 28.57 seconds.

Brandeis is back in action on Friday night at 6 p.m. when they close their home schedule against Bridgewater State University.
