CHICAGO – Junior Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) continued his excellent run at the 2019 University Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at the evening session on Day Two of action at the University of Chicago.
After establishing three school records and one NCAA Championship 'B' cut during preliminaries, Zitelny added another record and NCAA mark during the finals session.
In both the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly, Zitelny finished in fourth place. In the 100 butterfly, he lowered the record had broken in the morning session by another 0.15 seconds to 49.41 seconds, tying for fourth place. He finished 0.12 seconds shy of a top-three finish that would have garnered All-UAA honors. Zitelny also established his second NCAA 'B' cut of the meet, finishing about half a second behind the mark that would have gotten into the national meet a year ago.
In the 100 backstroke, Zitelny carried the second seed after preliminaries. His swim was not quite as fast in the finals, as he turned in a time of 49.87 seconds, 0.11 of his morning time. Zitelny missed All-Association honors by 0.17 seconds in that race, finishing in fourth place.
The Judges had four other individual scoring performances on Day Two of their competition.
Sophomore Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) lowered his own school record in the 200-yard free style with a time of 1:40.27, taking more than a second off his previous best and finishing in 10th place. His was actually the fourth-fastest time of the finals, behind only the top two finishers in the 'A' heat the winner of his race. Wohl was just 0.16 out of an NCAA 'B' cut.
Also scoring for the men was sophomore Richard Selznick (Las Vegas, Nev./Palos Verdes), who finished in 15th place in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:06.68, lowering his own second-best time in program history.
Rookie Alex Wang (Surrey, B.C. / Southpointe Academy) finished in 17th place in the 200 breaststroke, winning the 'C' final with a time of 59.17 seconds. He was close to a full second faster than the runner-up.
For the women, rookie Claire Xu (East Hanover, N.J. / Newark Academy) posted a 20th-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 58.67 seconds, just behind her prelim swim of 58.64. Xu was the team's first individual scorer of the meet for the women.
The Judges also set a pair of relay records to open the session in the 400 medley relays. For the women, the rookie group of Xu, Olivia Stebbins (Willington, Conn./Edwin O. Smith), Gazelle Umbay (North Hills, Calif./Sierra Canyon School) and Lauren Howard (Abington, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) became the first set of Judges to go under 1:50, swimming 1:49.76 and finishing in eighth place. The men's team of Zitelny, Wang, junior Matthew Arcemont (Santa Ana, Calif. / Mater Dei) and sophomore Marcelo Ohno-Machado (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines) were also eighth with a record time of 1:35.03. Both records had been set at last year's meet.
In the team standings, through three total days of competition (the Judges did not participate in the diving on Day 1 of the meet), both teams were in eighth place. The men stood just 4.5 points behind seventh-place Rochester, 387 to 382.5. The women trailed UR by a more substantial margin, 418-249.
