WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University swimming and diving team earned a split with visiting Vassar College today, with the men defeating the Brewers, 141-131, and the Judges falling on the women's side, 155-115. The Brandeis men improve to 1-1, while the women fall to 0-2. Vassar's women are now 2-0, while their men are 1-1.

In all, Brandeis won 16 of the 32 events. The men won 11 of 16 races, while the women took five events.

On the men's side, the Judges had two swimmers who won four events, senior Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) and junior Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill). Wohl led the way with three individual wins and one relay, while Zitelny had two solo wins and two on relays. Wohl won the freestyle sprints, taking the 50 with a time of 22.71 seconds, edging junior Marcelo Ohno-Machado (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) by 0.07 seconds. In the 100, Wohl out-touched Ohno-Machado by 0.09 seconds with a winning mark of 49.31. In the 200, Wohl bested a Vassar swimmer by more than two-and-a-half seconds with a time of 1:49.18.  Wohl and Ohno-Machado teamed with seniors Tom Alger (Plymouth, Mass./Sacred Heart) and Zitelny to win the 400 free relay in 3:20.45.

Zitenly's individual wins came in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.34 seconds, three seconds ahead of junior Joe Beletti-Naccarato (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central). Zitelny also captured the 100 butterfly with a mark of 52.21 seconds, 2.7 seconds ahead of classmate Matthew Arcemont (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei). Zitelny also anchored the winning 400 free relay and led off the winning 400 medley relay. He won the 400 medley with sophomore Brendon Lu (Basking Ridge, N.J.Ridge), Arcemont and Ohno-Machado with a time of 1:40.35.

Lu swept the breaststroke events with a time of 1:02.80 in the 100 and 2:17.31 for the 200.

Rookie James Barno (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa)earned his first collegiate win in the 200 back with a time of 2:02.60, while Arcemont picked up a win in the 200 IM with a mark of 2:04.53.

On the women's side, rookie Bailey Gold (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) picked up two of the team's individual wins. She captured the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:12.84, winning by nearly three full seconds. That time was good for fifth on Brandeis's all-time top 10 list. Gold won the 500 freestyle by a whopping 13 seconds with a time of 5:30.13.

The Judges' other two individual wins came in the 100 breaststroke, where junior Emily McGovern (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) won by two-thirds of a second with a time of 1:12.69. Rookie Ema Rennie (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) broke into the top 10 in the 50 free in eighth place with a winning time of 25.35 seconds. She won the race by about four-tenths of a second.

The Judges also had a relay victory, as junior Audrey Kim (Livington, N.J./Livingston), McGovern, rookie Christina McPhillips (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) and junior Uajda Musaku (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, outtouching the Vassar team by 0.01 of a second, 1:56.05 to 1:56.06.

Brandeis's next meet is a multi-meet at WPI on November 1 against Babson, Smith and Simmons.
