CHICAGO, Ill. – The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams will send competitors in eight of the 10 individual events to tonight's finals on the second day of action at the 2020 University Athletic Association Championships at the University of Chicago.

The highest individual finish in the preliminaries was turned in by junior Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill). Wohl placed 11^th in the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 1:40.95, about three-quarters of a second off the school record pace he established last year at UAAs. Wohl will be in tonight's 'B' final.

Rookie Bailey Gold (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) will be competing in two events in the evening session. In the 100-yard butterfly, Gold lowered her own school record by 0.83 of a second with a mark of 57.35 seconds. This was good for 15^th overall and a berth in the 'B' finals. This was the third individual school record and sixth overall set at the UAA championship meet so far by the Judges.

Gold also reached the 'C' finals in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.60 seconds, just ahead of a rival from Rochester in the 23^rd slot.

Also reaching two evening races is senior Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset). Zitelny is 17^th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.12 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second out of the 'B' final, and 18^th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.28 seconds.

The Judges had one event in which they will send two swimmers to tonight's finals, the women's 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Olivia Stebbins (Willington, Conn./ Edwin O. Smith) placed 23^rd with a time of 1:09.38, while junior Emily McGovern (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) was 24^th in 1:09.83. The two edged out swimmers from Case Western Reserve, one of the squads that the Judges are chasing in the team standings.

Other swimmers to reach tonight's races, both of whom will be swimming in 'C' finals, are junior Richard Selznick (Las Vegas, Nev./Dos Pueblos), who is 18^th in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:08.57, a six-second season-best, and sophomore Brendon Lu (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), who is 24^th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.36.

The Judges also had two relay prelims today, with the men placing 10^th in the 200 medley with a time of 1:34.70, represented by the team of Zitelny, Lu, senior Matthew Arcemont (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) and Wohl. The women were 11^th with a time of 1:50.78 swum by the group of junior Audrey Kim (Livingston, N.J. / Livingston), McGovern, Gold and rookie Ema Rennie (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto).

The evening session got off to a record-breaking start as the men's 200-yard medley relay finished in seventh place with a school-record time of 1:33.63, shaving more than a second off their preliminary time. They lowered their school record by more than half a second.

In the 200 freestyle, Wohl was able to break his own mark by a slim margin, lowering the record by four-hundredths of a second to 1:40.23, good for a 10th-place finish, the team's best individual showing of the meet so far. It was actually the seventh-fastest time of the finals between the three races, and was just two-tenths of a second shy of an NCAA qualifying time.

Zitelny won the 'C' final of the 100 butterfly and came up just short of his school record in the event with a time of 49.44 seconds, missing out on the record by three-hundredths of a second, He then came in second in the 'C' final of the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.23 seconds.

In the 200 breaststroke events, McGovern shaved 2 seconds off her prelim time to finish in 18^th place with a time of 1:07.71, just off her personal best. Stebbins was a shade off her prelim time but finished in 22^nd place with a time of 1:09.69.

Lu also showed a terrific two-second improvement in the 200 breaststroke, lowering his career-best time to 58.29 seconds, the second-fastest in program history. Gold finished in 24^th place in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.02.

The Judges rounded out the day with a seventh-place showing in the 800-yard freestyle relay on the men's side, as Wohl, Arcemont, Ohno-Machado and Lu finished in a time of 6:59.89, coming just a hair under a second shy of the school record, but nearly 0.9 seconds faster than Rochester, allowing the Judges to rank ahead of the Yellowjackets, 306-296, in seventh place in the team scoring. The women's top team was DQed, leaving Brandeis in eighth, 394-221, to Rochester.
