WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University sophomore Sam Dienstag of Wilmette, Ill., will represent the Judges at the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Championships will take place Wednesday, March 16th through Saturday, March 20th, at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Dienstag will compete for the Judges in two events, the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle (also known as the mile). He is the school record holder in both events, establishing both marks at the 2022 University Athletic Association Championships. His time of 4:30.95 in the 500 is ranked 26th at the championships, while his time of 15:34.66 is ranked 11th in the 1,650. He placed sixth in the mile at UAAs and finished eighth in the 500. In his two years at Brandeis, he has lowered the school record in the 500 by six seconds and in the mile by more than 30 seconds.

"This year has been so difficult, battling COVID-19, so this is a terrific way for Sam to cap it off," said fourth-year head coach Nicole Carter. "He has worked so hard all year long. He is really deserving of the chance to prove himself as one of the best in the nation."

Dienstag will swim in the 500 preliminaries on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. The 1,650 will be contested on Saturday with timed finals, races coming in both morning and evening sessions. Dienstag's heat is yet to be decided.

Dienstag will be the first Brandeis swimmer to compete at the NCAA Championships since Marc Eder '12 in 2009. As a first-year, he was named an All-American in the 500-yard freestyle thanks to his final time of the season being among the top 20 in the Division III, but he is looking to become Brandeis's first All-American at an NCAA Championship meet since Matthew Christian '05 in 2005.

Dienstag is a 2020 graduate of New Trier High School.
