WALTHAM, Mass, – The Brandeis swimming and diving teams returned to action today, taking on the visiting Tufts University Jumbos. This was the Judges' first official meet of the new year. Both the men's and the women's teams dropped their matchups with Tufts. The men's final score was 136-51, while the women's final score was 158-27.
This meet included two abnormal relays, the mixed 400-yard medley relay and the mixed 400-yard freestyle relay. For the medley relay, senior Benton Ferebee (Memphis, Tenn. / Memphis University School), sophomore Andrew Ngo (San Gabriel, Calif. / Gabrielino High School), senior Bailey Gold (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston), and first-year Nicole Caruso (Brentwood, Tenn. / Ravenwood High School) took second place with a time of 3:48.72. For the freestyle relay, junior Sam Dienstag (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier), senior Ema Rennie (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Scioto), Caruso, and first-year Ben Lee (Upton, Mass. / Nipmuc Regional High School) took sixth place with a time of 3:38.55.
On the men's side, Dienstag and Lee were the standouts on the day. Dienstag swept the distance event once again with times of 9:41.97 in the 1000-yard freestyle and 4:44.47 in the 500-yard freestyle. Lee took third place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.97 and followed Dienstag up in the 500, taking second place with a time of 4:55.97.
On the women's side, the standout swimmers were Caruso and junior Monica Iizuka (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham). Caruso took second place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:58.07 and eighth place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.55. Iizuka took fourth place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:18.12 and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.96.
The Judges return to action Wednesday, January 18 at 4:00 pm when they take on Stonehill College in a sprint meet.
