WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Brandeis sophomore Steven
Nieman (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and senior Scott
Schulman (Wethersfield, Conn.) extended foes to a third
set at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional
championships at Williams College, but neither could capture the
super-tiebreaker, as both were eliminated on day one of the
tournament.
Nieman won his first round match against Joshua Warren of Southern
Maine, 6-1, 6-2. He faced Alex White of Bowdoin in the second round
and the two split the first two sets, 6-3 for White in the first
and 7-6 for Nieman in the second. Nieman took that tie-breaker,
7-4, but White outlasted him, 10-6, in the third-set
super-tiebreaker.
Schulman and Kevin Pang of MIT also split the first two sets in
their first round match. Schulman opened strong with a 6-4 win in
the first, but Pang rallied in the second, 7-5, and captured the
super-tiebreaker in the third, 10-6.
In doubles action, Schulman and Nieman dropped an 8-6 decision to
Jung and Kim from Amherst.
