Milo, doubles propel men's tennis to 5-4 win over DI Bryant

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team won all three doubles matches and rookie Steven Milo (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) hung on to win a crucial third set at No. 3 singles as the Judges defeated Division I Bryant University, 5-4, on the Rieger Tennis Courts today.

The Judges (8-6) rolled out to a 3-0 lead after doubles competition. Milo and classmate Dave Yovanoff (Eden, N.Y./Eden) breezed to an 8-0 win at No. 2, while juniors Simon Miller (Plantation, Fla./Plantation) and Nick White (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) earned an 8-5 victory at No. 1. Sophomore Michael Tatarsky (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) and rookie Fred Rozenshteyn (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) held off their foes at No. 3, 9-7, to complete the sweep.

As singles began, Rozenshteyn gave the Judges a 4-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-3, win at No. 5. Sophomore Andres Orbitg (Guaynabo, P.R./Colegia Marista) got Bryant (6-10) on the board with a 6-3, 6-2, win at the sixth position. Junior Nicholai Hill (Ottowa, Ont./Lisgar Collegiate Institute) won the first of three three-set matches at No. 4 singles with a dominating final set, 6-2, 5-7, 6-0, over Yovanoff.

At the top of the lineup, White and Bulldog junior Cristian Balestrieri (Mar Del Plata, Argentina/Mar del Plata Day School) had a hard-fought tie-breaker in the second set with the visitor prevailing, 6-0, 7-6 (9-7) to cut the Brandeis lead to 4-3. Bryant sophomore Juan-Martin Paredes (Quito, Ecuador) defeated Miller, rallying from a set down, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

In the final match, Milo faced Bryant senior Kevin Gardiner (Powder Springs, Ga./Harrison). Gardiner won the first set, 6-4, but Milo bounced back to take the second, 7-5. The two traded early breaks in the third set, which was tied at 3-3. Milo broke earned a break to go up, 4-3, and consolidated with a hold. Gardiner ran out of steam in the final game, with Milo winning the match on a double fault.

Brandeis is back in action at the Rieger Courts on Sunday afternoon at noon when they take on Trinity College, while Bryant hosts Holy Cross Saturday at 2 p.m.
