No. 30 men's tennis tops Occidental, 7-2, in spring opener

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Brandeis University men's tennis team, ranked No. 30 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, won its first match of the spring season, taking a 7-2 decision from Occidental College on their February break swing through California.

The Judges improved to 2-0 overall by kicking off the match with a doubles sweep. Seniors Simon Miller (Plantation, Fla./Plantation) and Nick White (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), ranked 17th nationally, took an 8-5 decision at No. 1 in the closest of the three matches. Sophomores Steven Milo (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) and Dave Yovanoff (Eden, N.J./Eden) won 8-4 at No. 2 and senior Ezra Bernstein (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) and sophomore Josh Jordan (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) captured the No. 3 doubles match, 8-3.

In singles action, Miller had the most dramatic match, rallying from a set down for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory. White cruised at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3, while Milo took a long tiebreaker in the first set for a 7-6 (10-8), 6-4, victory. Jordan closed out  the win with a 6-3, 6-0, triumph at No. 6.

Brandeis takes on seventh-ranked Cal Lutheran this afternoon.
