WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis men's tennis team played indoors in the Gosman Athletic Center for the first time this season and the Judges defeated the visiting U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 8-1. Brandeis improves to 4-7, while the Bears fall to 7-3.
The Judges took a 2-1 lead after doubles action, with senior Ezra Bernstein (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) and junior Dave Yovanoff (Eden, N.Y./Eden) earning an 8-5 win at No. 2 and rookies Michael Secular (Bronx, N.Y./Plant, Fla.) and Ben Fine (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown School) taking an 8-2 win at No. 3. Coast Guard's lone point on the day came at No. 1 doubles, where seniors Nick Martin (State College, Pa.) and Greg Mitchell (Keene, N.H.) were 8-5 victors.
Singles action was tightly contested, with three three-set matches and four tiebreakers, but the Judges managed the sweep. Junior Josh Jordan (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) prevailed in the day's longest match at No. 1 singles, a match that went three sets and featured two tiebreakers, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Rookie Alec Siegel (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) also won at No. 3 in a third-set in a tie breaker, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (11-9). Yovanoff's three-set win came at No. 2, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, while Bernstein took a tiebreaker in the first set without dropping a point en route to a 7-6 (7-0), 7-3 win at No. 4.
The Judges return to action tomorrow afternoon at Bowdoin College at 4 p.m.
