WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team used depth and stamina at the bottom of the lineup today as the Judges defeated visiting Vassar College, 5-4, in the Gosman Athletic Center today. The Judges even their record at 3-3 in their first home match of the season, while the Brewers fall to 3-7 on the campaign.

With the match tied at 3-3 after the first round of singles was complete, the final three matches all went a full three sets. Rookie Mitch Krems (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Century Acad.) took the court at No. 4 after senior Josh Jordan (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) won the easiest singles match of the night at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2. Krems dropped a first-set tiebreaker to Vassar's Daniel Cooper, 7-5, but bounced back to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Krems gave the Judges a 4-3 lead as he improved to 5-1 on the season in singles. At No. 5 singles, Vassar tied the score when Christian Phelps knocked off Brandeis sophomore Michael Secular (Bronx, N.Y./Plant, Fla.), 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. That left the Judges' Alec Siegel (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield North) and the Brewers' Josh Kessler in a battle at No. 6. Kessler took the first set, 7-5, but Siegel rallied to win the second set, 6-4. Siegel earned a pair of service breaks in the third set to win, 6-2, and clinch the match.

Vassar picked up a pair of wins in the top half of the singles ladder. At No. 1, Andrew Guzick had a surprisingly easy win in the third set tiebreaker against Brandeis senior Steven Milo (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset), 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1). Nick Jasso had the only straight-set win for the Brewers, defeating Dave Yovanoff (Eden, N.Y./Eden) 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

In doubles action, Brandeis got wins at the top two spots, with Jordan and Milo defeating Guzick and Freeman, 8-6, while Yovanoff and Krems edged Jasso and Kessler, 9-7. Cooper and Kessler downed Secular and Siegel at No. 3, 8-4, to earn the Brewers' lone doubles point.

Brandeis returns to action next weekend at the Middlebury Invitational with matches against Oneonta State and the host Panthers.
