WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis men's tennis team dropped a pair of tiebreakers in doubles action and the Judges were unable to recover, falling to 21st-ranked Bates College, 7-2, in the Gosman Athletic Center tonight.

After the Bobcat duo of junior Timmy Berg and sophomore Pierre Planche opened the scoring with a win over the Judges' pair of rookie Mitch Krems (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Century Acad.) and sophomore Alec Siegel (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) at No. 2 doubles, 8-4, the other two matches went the distance. At No. 1, Bobcat seniors Matt Bettles and Rob Crampton rallied from 4-2 down in the tiebreaker to win 7-5 over Brandeis seniors Steve Milo (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) and Josh Jordan (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional). At third doubles, it was junior Ben Bogard and sophomore Henry Lee who downed rookie Danny Lubarsky (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School) and senior Dave Yovanoff (Eden, N.Y./Eden), 7-4 in the tiebreaker.

In singles action, Milo registered Brandeis's first point, gaining revenge on Crampton at No. 1 with a marathon first set tiebreaker before an easy second set, 7-6 (12-10), 6-1. Yet another long tiebreaker enabled the Bobcats to move within one point of victory when Berg defeated Krems, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 3. The visitors closed the match out with the only three-set match of the night at No. 2, where Bettles defeated Jordan, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-1. Brandeis recorded their second point at No. 6 singles as the evening wore down, where Siegel topped Bogard in a pro-set, 8-6.

The Judges are right back in action tomorrow morning against Tufts University at 9 a.m.
