ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Brandeis University men's tennis team finished in seventh place at the 2013 University Athletic Association championships, going 1-2.
The Judges, seeded sixth, suffered a 9-0 loss to third-seeded Washington University in the quarter finals. The Bears went on to defeat top-seeded Emory in the championship match to claim the UAA title.
In the consolation round, the Brandeis met New York University in the semifinals. The Judges fell behind, 2-1, after doubles action, with rookie Danny Lubarsky (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School) and senior Dave Yovanoff (Eden, N.Y./Eden) earning an 8-4 win at No. 3 for the team's first points of the tournament. In singles play, senior Josh Jordan (Northborough, Mass./Northborough), who was playing in his first singles matches in nearly two months, earned a point at No. 2 with a three-set win, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Yovanoff added a point at No. 3 with a pair of 7-5 set wins, but the Judges dropped the rest of their singles matches, including a dramatic match at No. 1, where senior Steven Milo (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker, 15-13.
In the seventh-place match, the Judges were able to end their 2013 season on a positive note with a 6-3 win over the University of Rochester. Brandeis took two of three doubles matches from the Yellowjackets to open the action. Milo and Jordan claimed an 8-4 win at No.l 1, while sophomores Alec Siegel (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) and Michael Secular (Bronx, N.Y./Plant, Fla.) were ahead 4-0 when their opponents retired. While UR was able to take the top two singles matches, the Judges cruised with straight-set wins in the rest of their matches. Secular at No. 5 and Lubarsky at No. 6 each took 6-3, 6-1 decisions. Yovanoff was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No. 3. In the fourth spot, Siegel earned a tight 7-5 win in the first set before rolling to a 6-1 win in the second.
The Judges finished the 2013 season with an 8-12 record.
