ORANGE, Calif. — In the second leg of a three-match February break trip to California, the Brandeis University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season by edging Chapman University, 5-4.

      The Brandeis men got off to a strong start, taking two out of three doubles matches. Junior Michael Secular (Bronx, N.Y./Plant, Fla.) and rookie Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) opened with an 8-5 win in the third spot, while rookie Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) and sophomore Danny Lubarsky (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School) used a tiebreaker, 7-5, to win at No. 1.

      Moving to singles action, Granoff cruised to a 6-2, 6-2, win to give the Judges a 3-1 lead before Chapman rallied to tie the match. The Panthers' Charlie Werman won at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1, and Brett Buford took a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 3. Arguello picked up his first dual-match win as Brandeis's No. 1 singles player with a fine comeback. After dropping the first set, 1-6, Arguello lost just two games the rest of the way, 6-2, 6-0, for Brandeis's fourth point. Secular clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3, win at sixth singles. Lubarsky nearly got a sixth point for the Judges, but could not pull out a third-set super tiebreaker for the second match in a row, falling 10-6 after winning the second set, 6-2.

      With the win, Brandeis is now 1-1 on the season, while Chapman suffered its first loss to fall to 2-1. The Judges complete their West Coast swing Friday against Occidental College.
