BRANDEIS MEN'S TENNIS DROPS TWO AT MIDDLEBURY INVITATIONAL

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The #33 Brandeis men's tennis team suffered a pair of losses over the weekend to two teams ranked ahead of them in the ITA Division III national poll. The Judges suffered a 7-2 loss at the hands of host and third-ranked Middlebury and a 5-3 loss to #29 Stevens Institute of Technology.

Against Middlebury (2-0) on Saturday, Brandeis fell behind, 3-0, after doubles action. The Panthers put together two quick wins at No. 1 and 3 singles to clinch the win. The Judges' points came at No. 2 singles, where sophomore Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) won a lengthy first-set tiebreaker to emerge victorious over Noah Farrell, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4; and at No. 4, where the longest match of the day saw senior Alec Siegel (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) defeat Courtney Mountifield, 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 in the super tiebreaker.

The next day against Stevens Tech (4-3), the Judges went ahead in doubles action with a pair of wins. Sophomore Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and junior Eric Miller (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker) took an 8-4 decision over the Ducks' Matthew Heinrich and Ben Foran at No. 1, while Arguello and sophomore Jeff Cherkin (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) won by the same score at No. 2 over Danny Polk and Michael Feldman.

Brandeis was unable to carry the momentum over to singles action. Arguello completed a 3-1 weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Foran at No. 2, but Granoff suffered a heartbreaking loss to Heinrich at No. 1, losing both sets in a tiebreaker. Siegel also had a chance to win at No. 4 after winning the first set in a tiebreaker, but opponent Charles Drake came back for a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 win to clinch the match for the Ducks.

The Judges are now 2-5 overall, with all of their losses coming at the hands of teams ranked ahead of them in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III national rankings. The squad is back in action on Friday at Wesleyan University before playing their home opener Saturday at 10 a.m. against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
