WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon, as the #26 Judges suffered a 5-4 defeat at the hands of #25 Stevens Institute of Technology. The Judges bounced back with a 7-2 win against University Athletic Association rival NYU on Sunday afternoon.

Against Stevens, the Ducks jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles action. The junior tandem of Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Ryan Bunis (Cincinnati, Ohio / Groton-Dunstable, Mass.) picked up the Judges' point at No. 3, 9-7, after SIT won the first two matches 8-3.

In singles play, rookie Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y. / Great Neck South) quickly got Brandeis back on the board at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Stevens took the next two straight set wins, as Ben Foran edged Brandeis senior Danny Lubarsky (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School), 6-3, 6-3, and Matt Heinrich knocked off Granoff, 7-6, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot.

The final three matches each went three sets, with rookie Zach Cihlar (Phoenix, Ariz. / Brophy College Prep.) rallying from a set down at No. 6 for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win, to make it a 4-3 match. The match was decided at No. 2, where junior Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) broke Charles Drake of Stevens three times in the second but couldn't quite finish him off in a tiebreaker the third before falling, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (7-4). Bunis earned the Judges' final point at No. 3, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.

The next day against NYU, Brandeis took two of three doubles matches, with both wins coming by 9-7 scores. Juniors Arguello and Jeff Cherkin (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) won at No. 1, while Lubarsky teams with rookie Jackson Kogan (Pacific Palisades, Calif. / Windward School) at No. 2.

The Judges went on to take five of six singles matches, with Arguello a double winner on the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3. Kogan also won twice with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5. Cihlar clinched the match at No. 6, 6-3, 6-2. Bunis took a 6-4, 6-4, decision at No. 2, while Ng won the match's only three-setter, 7-6, 6-7, 10-7.

The Judges are slated to make their home debut this Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against another UAA foe, the University of Rochester.
